Disclosure: The estimates below was compiled using an artificial intelligence tool, based on my own data.

On an absolute basis, the JSE gold mining sector is navigating a pivotal test of intermediate structure after an aggressive multi-week correction. Currently, only AngloGold Ashanti (ANG) trades in close contention with its 200-day Simple Moving Average (157,795 ZAC), while Gold Fields (GFI), Harmony Gold (HAR), and DRDGOLD (DRD) remain pinned beneath their respective 200-day baselines. However, the velocity of the recent sell-off has driven tactical momentum into deeply compressed, oversold territory (tactical RSIs ranging from 23.12 in GFI to 49.13 in PAN). Across the complex, the 50-week Exponential Moving Average (EMA) represents the critical macro floor. Over a 3- to 6-month horizon, the sector exhibits a 60% probability of base-building and mean-reverting consolidation, rather than a full secular breakdown.

On a relative basis, internal divergence has become acute. AngloGold Ashanti (ANG) and Pan African Resources (PAN) exhibit superior relative strength: ANG is holding positive weekly momentum (+1.54%) and testing its short-term moving average cluster, while PAN has reclaimed its 8-day and 75-day EMAs. Conversely, Gold Fields (GFI) has suffered extreme relative decoupling due to an 18.06% one-month drawdown, leaving it at a double-digit discount to its Technical Fair Value. DRDGOLD (DRD) continues to lag the peer group structurally, burdened by an inverted moving average stack and negative 1-year performance (−18.16%).

  1. High-Asymmetry Mean-Reversion Play (GFI):

    • Gold Fields (GFI) presents the highest tactical asymmetry. Its tactical RSI sits deeply oversold at 23.12, and the stock trades at a 10.81% discount to its Technical Fair Value (66,375 ZAC). A mean-reversion move toward the 50-week EMA (65,665 ZAC) offers favorable risk/reward against defined stops below the recent swing low of 55,297 ZAC.

  2. Key Inflection Thresholds:

    • Harmony Gold (HAR): Hovering directly below its 50-week EMA (29,209 ZAC) and 1-month floor (28,353 ZAC). Reclaiming the 30,200 ZAC zone (200-day SMA) is essential to avert a slide to the 23,366 ZAC 6-month support base.

    • Pan African Resources (PAN): Currently breaking out of a multi-week base above its 8-day (2,665 ZAC) and 75-day (2,637 ZAC) EMAs. A push through the 21-day EMA (2,700 ZAC) opens immediate upside to the 200-day SMA at 2,838 ZAC.
