As mentioned in the original post: The full target of $672 was reached earlier this week and the share traded above $700 post earnings. I was curious to know what the price action model for Meta Platforms stated ... Overbought + Very Bullish, But .... 'Sellers Becoming Active...' I'm NOT suggesting an immediate drop in price or that this is the exact top....but rather the potential for the formation a topping structure or slowdown in upward momentum over the next 3 to 5 months. i.e. the current levels offer a poor buy/long reward-to-risk going forward . Previous Post: 12 September Real-Time: 19h12 (South African Time) / U.S Trading Session Ticker: FB Formerly known as Facebook Inc, the share has shown relative strength, holding near it's multi-year highs however not having made much progress since the first quarter of this year. This could change as the price looks to re-test it's overhead resistance of $543 upon which strong price action/candle structure would suggest a move into a new trading range and a continuation of the multi-year upward trend. Here, an upside target of $672 applicable, with the setup being invalidated on a weekly close below $490. Note: Meta Platforms (Facebook) was an idea flagged through my model nearly 2 years ago at $90. Now trading above $522! (Edit: This week (End Jan 2025), it traded above $700! Current Price Action Model Reading: Previous Post On 05 December we discussed the index, highlighting the risk of a medium term retracement as well as the live reading from the Tactical Trading Guide (Price Action Model) which was as follows: (2 to 4 week time frame): "a possible bearish reversal following a very bullish move" and (5 to 8 week time frame): Aggressive buying underway, but overbought on the lower time frame. Expect a consolidation or a minor retracement". Our analysis coincided with the medium term top as the index retreated from 6098 to 5768 (-330 points or -5%). This was followed by a rebound however, the index has struggled to clear over the overhead resistance range and maintain it's position above 6098 for a sustained period. Over the course of this week, we saw broad-based selling pressure, with the index at multi-week lows. The only two sectors which saw safe-haven buying were Consumer Staples and Utilities, both of which have featured strongly on our screens prior to the note and which we published as buy candidates. - Talking Points: Here's What You Need To Know
US Market Stagnation: The 2025 financial year commenced with a noticeable stagnation and subsequent weakness in the United States stock market, failing to replicate the robust growth experienced in other global markets during the first two months. Declining US Bond Yields: U.S. bond yields have experienced a significant decline, falling from 4.70% to 4.11%, triggering investor concerns about a potential economic slowdown and fostering a "growth scare" sentiment. Weakening US Dollar: The U.S. dollar has exhibited a weakening trend, mirroring the decline in bond yields, which has facilitated broader international market expansion by alleviating the constraints imposed by its previous strength. European Stock Market Surge: European stock markets have witnessed a substantial surge, reaching multi-year highs, driven in part by the region's relatively lower stock valuations, though long-term growth remains moderate. Chinese Stock Recovery: Chinese stocks are demonstrating signs of recovery, propelled by a combination of depressed stock prices and government initiatives supporting the technology sector, thereby bolstering investor confidence. South African Domestic Stock Decline: South African stocks focused on the local economy have experienced a downturn following a period of growth, as investors engage in profit-taking and await further clarity on economic growth and company earnings. JSE Industrial Sector Strength: On the Johannesburg Stock Exchange (JSE), industrial companies, including prominent entities such as Naspers, Prosus, British American Tobacco, and Richemont, have been the primary drivers of market gains. Platinum Miner Rally: In contrast to the lagging diversified mining sector, platinum miners have rallied sharply off their recent lows within the past week. US Investor Preference for Defensive Sectors: In the U.S., investors are displaying a clear preference for stable and reliable sectors, such as healthcare and consumer staples ("defensives"), perceived as safer havens amidst economic uncertainty, while technology stocks lag. Global Sector Divergence: Outside the U.S., technology, financial, and consumer discretionary sectors are leading market growth, highlighting a distinct divergence in investor focus compared to the U.S. preference for defensive sectors. Summary: The global market in early 2025 is characterized by a significant divergence in performance. The U.S. market is experiencing stagnation, decreasing bond yields, and a weakening dollar, leading to investor concerns about a potential economic slowdown. This has resulted in a shift towards defensive sectors within the U.S. Meanwhile, European and Chinese markets are experiencing growth, driven by factors such as lower valuations and government support. South Africa presents a mixed picture, with industrial companies thriving while local economy stocks and diversified mining remain relatively stable, except for a recent platinum miner rally. A key overarching trend is the movement of investor attention away from the U.S. towards other global markets, where lower expectations are creating opportunities for growth. This global shift reflects a reassessment of risk and reward, with investors seeking diversification and potential returns beyond the traditionally dominant U.S. market. - Harmony Gold: I Missed This Move, But The Model Didn't
Trade Harmony Gold with Unum Capital To get started, email lester@unum.co.za Summary: The price action model - though unsophisticated and unorthodox - is a useful tool in helping traders manage risk and uncover opportunity. Most recently, our research highlighted the downside risk in Harmony Gold, with the share subsequently declining by 20% in quick succession. Before that, our research (driven by the price action model) identified a long side opportunity that saw HAR rally significantly. This past week, unfortunately, I missed sharp rebound, as the share gained 18% for the week. What's interesting is that the price action model was 'on point' in recognizing the opportunity. Check out the chart time-stamped reading below (Thursday, 27 February), 1 day before the bottom on Friday 28 February.
