  • Similarities In The Setups

Tuesday 29 October 2024 Time Published: Pre-Market Exxaro Resources (EXX) & African Rainbow Minerals (ARI) vs Northam Platinum (NPH) The 21-week EMA Is Useful Tool In Measuring Reward-To-Risk as well as Uncovering Opportunities In this case, both EXX and ARI exhibit similar setups to the one recently seen with NPH where there was strong price action around a flat 21-week exponential moving average that eventually saw a 'break' above. Even if you missed the bottom, there are always 'continuation' trades/strategies to employ. EXX - buy/long idea recently at R155 TTG & Chart as of yesterday's close ARI - recent view on positioning for a rebound at the swing lows. (around R155, bullish reversal as the price traded up to R200) TTG & Chart as of yesterday's close NPH - Notice the persistent test of the 21-week EMA? (recent strategy alert at R93, last week's high was +R149) TTG & Chart as of yesterday's close Lester Davids Analyst: Unum Capital

  • Sasol: A Rare Triple Model Reading

Tuesday 29 October 2024 Time Published: Pre-Market Ticker: SOL For this share, the risk is very high and the bearish momentum is strong. Reviewing last night's data set, I did notice a rare triple reading. Previous Post: Thursday 24 October 2024 Time Published: Pre-Market Ticker: SOL Despite the recent low price and short term oversold conditions, the weekly chart painted the picture of a share that had further room to fall. This view was shared with clients a month ago on Monday 23 September in the note: "Avoid: Large Cap Weekly Breakdown'. As of yesterday's close, the model reading highlights the following: SHORT TERM (1 to 10 days): "The reward-to-risk is becoming attractive for a small buy/long position' while the MEDIUM TERM (2 to 4 week) reading states that " traders would be best suited to wait for the price to stabilize" i.e. stop declining or cease it's aggressive selling pressure. I don't have the data or tools to tell whether institutional investors will retain the selling pressure however we can use the model reading to help assess reward-to-risk. Again considering the weekly chart, the share continues to trend lower, having breached the lower boundary of the bear flag structure. The price is below the 8, 21 and 50-week moving averages, all of which are declining. It is also below the 200-week SMA, which is also declining. There is no clear support for the share, except the two swing lows at R70, which was tested in May and October 2020. Until there is a clear improvement in candle structure and price action , trying to catch a falling knife is likely to yield more pain than pleasure. SASOL WEEKLY CHART (as of yesterday's close) SASOL DAILY CHART (as of yesterday's close) Previous Post: PREMIUM POST [Monday 23 September note: "Avoid: Large Cap Weekly Breakdown'] Pre-Market Poor, absolute and relative price trend Poor, absolute and relative candle structure Trading below it's declining 200-day EMA Each rally is being sold Avoid until price action improves! • Precious Metals Rotation: Your Trade Is 15% In The Money

From A Market Neutral Perspective, Buying Platinum Shares While Selling Gold Shares Would Have Yielded 15% Tuesday 29 October 2024 Time Published: Pre-Market Previous Post: Rotation Underway Pre-Market Update: The rotation with the precious metals sector is underway, with Platinum Miners being preferred over Gold Miners. Note the pending MACD cross and negative divergence on the RSI as per the monthly chart. Previous Post (22 August 2024) - Buy Platinum Miners, Sell Gold Miners Pre-Market Relative Sector Analysis Below is a relative chart which highlights the performance of equally-weighted gold miners and equally-weighted platinum miners. Worth noting is the following: (1) the ratio trading at a key inflection point i.e. the upper boundary of a multi-year parallel channel (2) the development of a rising wedge where the latter stages of the structure is in line with the aforementioned parallel channel (3) the ration being in the (very) early stages of a potential loss momentum which is denoted by the 14-day RSI printing lower highs while the ration continues to print higher highs. Bottom Line: The inflection point, along with the technical 'signals' may be presenting range for medium term traders to switch out of gold miners and into platinum miners on a relative basis. • Foretelling Friday: JSE Top 40 vs. South African Banks – Momentum Shifts Ahead?

This week, the South African banking sector is showing signs of slowing momentum against the broader JSE Top 40 index. Despite a solid run, the equally weighted JSE Banks index has hit resistance within its multi-year trading channel, and its upward push appears to be losing strength. Adding to this, the index has stretched significantly above its 200-week simple moving average (SMA), suggesting that it may soon pull back toward this long-term trendline. This positioning indicates potential weakness for banks relative to the broader market. JSE Banks (equally weighted) Relative to the JSE top 40 index. The chart is done by Lester Davids, Unum Capital Analyst. Key Factors to Watch: Technical Resistance:  The JSE Banks index has reached a critical resistance level in its multi-year channel, which could serve as a ceiling and signal the end of the current upward trend. Mean Reversion Risk:  When an index extends well beyond its 200-week SMA, it often hints at a possible pullback, as it has strayed far from its long-term average. Banks may see a reversion toward this mean in the coming sessions. Rand Strengthening:  Adding pressure to the banks, the South African rand has strengthened in recent sessions. While a stronger rand benefits some sectors, it often compresses banks' profit margins, particularly in their export or foreign-denominated revenue streams, putting them at a relative disadvantage in the broader market. What do you think? We'd love to hear your thoughts. Participate in our poll on our social media platforms. The banking sector will experience a pullback this week. The banking sector is resilient and will extend its upward run. The banking sector will stabilise at these levels before a decisive movement. As we progress into next week, keep an eye on whether banks can sustain these levels or if we’ll see a rotation back into other sectors within the JSE Top 40.
