Components: Copper: Copper often serves as a proxy for global economic activity. A decline in copper prices could signal slowing economic growth, increasing risk. High Beta vs Low Beta: High beta stocks tend to be more volatile than low beta stocks. A widening spread between high and low beta returns might indicate increased risk aversion. Growth vs Value: Growth stocks typically outperform value stocks in bull markets. A shift towards value stocks could suggest investors are becoming more cautious. EM Currencies: Emerging market currencies can be sensitive to risk appetite. A weakening of EM currencies could signal increased risk aversion. AUD/USD: The Australian Dollar is often used as a proxy for global risk sentiment. A decline in AUD/USD could indicate increased risk aversion. Consumer Staples vs Consumer Discretionary: Consumer staples are generally considered defensive assets. A shift towards consumer staples could suggest investors are seeking safety. Semiconductors vs S&P 500: The semiconductor sector is cyclical and sensitive to economic downturns. Underperformance of semiconductors relative to the broader market could signal increased risk. - Trading African Rainbow Minerals: 7-Month High + 36% Gain + Updated Model Reading
Research Notes For 09 to 13 June > https://www.unum.capital/post/r0913june Trade Local & Global Financial Markets with Unum Capital. To get started, email tradingdesk@unum.co.za Today, the share reached a 7-month high of 18313c which is 36% higher than the initial level of 13390c on 26-February (publication date of research note). Overall Trading Considerations for African Rainbow Minerals: Here's a breakdown of the current price action: The 7-day trend is indicated as "Strong," while the 14-day trend is "Very Bullish." Comparison: Both the short-term (7-day) and slightly longer short-term (14-day) trends indicate upward momentum ("Strong" and "Very Bullish" respectively) for the share. This suggests a consistent buying pressure across these timeframes. The "Very Bullish" 14-day trend reinforces the "Strong" 7-day trend, indicating that the recent strength is part of a broader upward movement for African Rainbow Minerals . Potential Trading Approach: Short Term (Approximately Next 1 to 10 Trading Days): The model notes, "Aggressive Buying Wait For Pullback To Enter Next-Alternatively If The Highs Fail To Hold Then Short Back To The 8 Or 21-EMA." Approach: While aggressive buying is present, the recommendation is to wait for a pullback to enter, or if highs fail to hold, to short back to the 8 or 21-EMA. This suggests a "buy the dip" strategy within an overall bullish short-term trend, but with an awareness of potential short-term reversals. Medium Term (Approximately Next 2 to 4 Weeks): The model indicates "Aggressive Buying But Do Not Chase-Look For Overshoot Or Failure To Hold Prior Session Range Highs To Short-Sell Back To The 8-EMA." Approach: The medium term also suggests aggressive buying for African Rainbow Minerals , but with a strong caution against chasing the price. It advises looking for overshoots or failures to hold prior session range highs to short-sell back to the 8-EMA. This implies managing risk by taking profits or initiating short positions on extended bullish moves. Long Term (Approximately Next 5 to 8 Weeks): The model states, "Strong Attempt At A Bullish Reversal Following A Consolidation Phase." Approach: The long-term perspective for African Rainbow Minerals points to a strong attempt at a bullish reversal following a consolidation phase. This suggests a potential significant upward movement after a period of sideways trading. Overall Trading Considerations for African Rainbow Minerals: Consistent bullish momentum: Both short and slightly longer short-term trends are bullish for African Rainbow Minerals , supporting upward price action. Short-term caution: Despite the buying pressure, the model advises caution in the short term, recommending waiting for pullbacks for buying opportunities and being prepared for short-term reversals if highs don't hold. Medium-term strategic buying with risk management: The medium term reinforces aggressive buying but emphasizes not chasing the price and looking for opportunities to short-sell on extended rallies back to the 8-EMA for African Rainbow Minerals . Long-term bullish attempt: The long term shows a strong bullish attempt for African Rainbow Minerals following a weaker trend, indicating a potential significant upward move. In summary, the current view is bullish across short to medium terms, with a long-term bullish attempt following a consolidation phase. However, traders should be cautious, look for pullbacks as buying opportunities, and manage risk by not chasing the price and being prepared to short-sell extended rallies in the medium term. The model points to a general upward trend for the price of African Rainbow Minerals . Previous Post (Monday 26 May): Trading African Rainbow Minerals. Approach + Long Term Target Strong upside follow-through from 26-Feb note at 13390c. Falling wedge breakout sees temporary reclaim of the 200-day SMA Improved candle structure Short Term: Strong / approaching overbought Long Term: Strong attempt at a recovery Key level: ~17250c Long term target is ~20100c - 20900c (around the 200-week) For African Rainbow Minerals (ARI) , here's a breakdown of the potential trading approach across different timeframes: Short Term (approx. next 1 to 10 Trading Days): The model indicates "Very Strong Move Buyers In Control But Don't Chase-May Fail At Attempt To Hold The Highs-If It Doesn't Hold Then The 8-EMA May Be A Short/Sell Target." Approach: Be cautious of chasing the upward momentum. Look for potential signs of weakness at the highs. If the price fails to hold these highs, the 8-EMA could become a short-sell target. Consider waiting for a pullback or confirmation of failure at the highs before initiating a short position. Medium Term ( approx. next 2 to 4 Weeks): The model suggests "Aggressive Buying But Do Not Chase-Look For Overshoot or Failure To Hold Prior Session Range Highs To Short-Sell Back To The 8-EMA." Approach: Similar to the short term, while there's aggressive buying, avoid chasing. Watch for potential overshoots or failure to sustain above prior session highs. These could present opportunities to short-sell, targeting a move back down to the 8-EMA. Long Term ( approx. next 5 to 8 Weeks): The model describes a "Strong Attempt At A Bullish Reversal Following A Consolidation Phase." Approach: The long-term outlook suggests a potential bullish reversal. This might warrant looking for buying opportunities on pullbacks or confirmations of the reversal. However, this needs to be considered in the context of the short and medium-term cautions about chasing highs. Overall Trading Considerations for ARI: Short-term caution: The model advises against chasing the current buying pressure in the short and medium term, highlighting potential for failure at the highs. Potential short opportunities: Watch for signs of weakness at the highs in the short to medium term, with the 8-EMA as a potential target for short-selling. Long-term bullish potential: The longer term suggests a bullish reversal, so any short-term bearish moves could eventually present longer-term buying opportunities if the reversal thesis holds. Research Notes For 09 to 13 June > https://www.unum.capital/post/r0913june Trade Local & Global Financial Markets with Unum Capital. To get started, email tradingdesk@unum.co.za Code: PALL Previous Post (Saturday 07 June): Palladium: Triggered; Strong Candle Structure; Catch-Up With Basket The chart below is an update to our previous post (26 May) in which we highlighted the (1) re-test of the 200-day SMA and (2) The $1042 level as the trigger for a potential 'momentum run'. Previous Post (26 May: Palladium: Retesting The 200d; Triggers Above $1042) A flat 200-day moving average is often accompanied by a price that is rangebound i.e. struggling to find direction. Whilst it can be frustrating in the short term, traders should remain alert to the potential for strength (or weakness) on the lower time frames which may be indicative of renewed buying (or selling) interest. In the case of Palladium, the commodity has rebound from below the 200-day SMA to above, and in recent sessions has unwind in from ultra short term overbought to re-test the 200-day SMA. If we start to see strength on the lower time frame and a break above the $1042 level, this could be a trigger for further upside, with the medium term target being the prior swing highs of $1252. To get started, email tradingdesk@unum.co.za Flash Comment/Further Update: Tight consolidation in an overbought range. Take note of these candles here. As noted on Friday, the model points to an OVERBOUGHT range! Previous Post (Friday 06 June): JSE Top 40 Index: The index is higher by 26% versus the low on Monday 07 April. The move is in line with the price action model reading at the time (included in the original note) where the long term reading (approximately 5 to 8 weeks) stated the following: "Aggressive selling is underway following a steady upward trend. Look for support at the prior swing lows to capture minor rebounds" . Here's a breakdown of the current price action: The 7-day trend is indicated as " Overbought ," while the 14-day trend is " Very Bullish ." Comparison : The 7-day trend being "Overbought" suggests that the price has risen significantly in a short period and might be due for a pause or pullback. Conversely, the 14-day trend being "Very Bullish" indicates strong upward momentum over a slightly longer timeframe. This implies that while the immediate short-term might see some exhaustion from being "Overbought," the underlying momentum over the past two weeks remains strongly bullish. The "Overbought" 7-day trend could be a temporary condition within the broader "Very Bullish" 14-day trend. Potential Trading Approach: Short Term (Approximately Next 1 to 10 Trading Days): The model notes, "Very Strong Move Buyers In Control But Don't Chase-May Fail At Attempt To Hold The Highs-If It Doesn't Hold Then The 8-EMA May Be A Short/Sell Target." Approach : While buyers are in strong control, avoid chasing the price higher. Look for potential short-sell opportunities if the price fails to hold the recent highs, targeting a move back down to the 8-period Exponential Moving Average (EMA). This suggests a tactical approach of fading strength if it shows signs of exhaustion. Medium Term (Approximately Next 2 to 4 Weeks): The model indicates "Very Strong Move Buyers In Control But Don't Chase-May Fail At Attempt To Hold The Highs-If It Doesn't Hold Then The 8-EMA May Be A Short/Sell Target." Approach : Similar to the short-term, buyers are in strong control, but the same cautionary advice applies. Do not chase the price. Be prepared for potential failures to hold highs, and consider the 8-EMA as a short/sell target if such failures occur. This implies a continuation of the strong bullish sentiment but with an ongoing emphasis on tactical risk management around overextended moves. Long Term (Approximately Next 5 to 8 Weeks): The model states, "Very Strong Move Buyers In Control But Don't Chase-May Fail At Attempt To Hold The Highs-If It Doesn't Hold Then The 8-EMA May Be A Short/Sell Target." Approach : The long-term perspective also shows buyers firmly in control. The consistent advice across all timeframes is not to chase the price and to be mindful of potential failures to hold highs, where the 8-EMA could serve as a short/sell target. This suggests a sustained bullish outlook, but with an underlying strategy that prioritizes patience and tactical selling into strength if momentum falters at key levels. Overall Trading Considerations: Consistent bullish momentum : Both short and slightly longer short-term trends are bullish, supporting upward price action. Caution against chasing : A crucial and consistent theme across all timeframes is the warning against chasing the price. This suggests that while the overall trend is up, the market might be prone to short-term pullbacks or corrections. Tactical short opportunities : The repeated mention of "May Fail At Attempt To Hold The Highs-If It Doesn't Hold Then The 8-EMA May Be A Short/Sell Target" across all timeframes indicates that even within a strong bullish trend, tactical short-selling opportunities back to the 8-EMA are likely to arise. 8-EMA as a key level : The 8-EMA is identified as a potential target for short/sell positions if the price fails to hold higher levels, making it a critical level to monitor. In summary , for JSE TOP 40 INDEX, the current view is strongly bullish across all timeframes. Buyers are in control, suggesting continued upward momentum. However, a significant and repeated caveat is the strong advice against chasing the price. Instead, the model emphasizes looking for potential short-selling opportunities if the market fails to hold recent highs, with the 8-EMA serving as a key target. This indicates a strategy of participating in the bullish trend but with a tactical approach to manage overbought conditions or temporary pullbacks. Previous Post (Sunday 06 April): JSE Top 40 Index: Weekly Chart Analysis JSE Top 40 Index Analysis: Short Term (1 to 10 days): The short-term reading is Oversold . This suggests that the index has likely experienced a significant decline and may be due for a rebound or consolidation. However, being oversold alone doesn't guarantee an immediate reversal. Medium Term (2 to 4 weeks): The medium-term reading is Weak . This implies that the index has been trending downwards over the past few weeks, indicating underlying selling pressure. Long Term (5 to 8 weeks): The long-term reading is Neutral . This suggests that over a broader timeframe, the index hasn't established a clear upward or downward trend. Overall Assessment: Taking into account the weighted importance (short-term being the most significant), the JSE Top 40 Index exhibits deteriorating price action. While the oversold reading in the short term might offer a temporary bounce, the weakness in the medium term, coupled with the lack of a strong long-term trend, suggests caution. The recent price action is more aligned with the medium-term weakness than the potential for a short-term recovery. JSE TOP 40 WEEKLY CHART Lester Davids Senior Investment Analyst: Unum Capital

To get started, email tradingdesk@unum.co.za Further Update: Running 9.5%; Reaching a high of 7110c Per Share. Strong upside follow-through on the simultaneous pennant/flag and 50-day EMA break. Well done to clients who may have participated in the move. Previous Post (Monday 02 June), Glencore: Relative Outperformance, Adding +440c (or +6.7%) Today, (Friday 30-May), the share stood out among it's peers, adding over 3% for the session. Over the week and since last week Friday's post, we saw a 6.7% gain, with the share also advancing in line with the price action model. Previous Post (Friday 23 May): Trading Glencore Plc: Technical Regime + Price Action Probabilities The 50-day EMA is losing downside momentum. Reclaiming the 50-EMA + clearing the downward trend line resistance opens up a path back toward the 200-day SMA. Fundamentally, the Copper bull case (supply shortage) remains in tact. Analyst Disclosure: The summary below (based on the price action guide above), has been written with an A.I tool. Summary The overall setup for Glencore PLC appears to be mildly bullish to neutral with a potential for bullish development . In the short term (1-10 trading days) , the analysis indicates that Glencore PLC is "Attempting A Bullish Reversal Following A Consolidation Phase." This suggests that after a period of sideways movement, there is an emerging upward momentum being observed. This points to a potential for a bullish move in the near term. Looking at the medium term (next 2 to 4 weeks) , the expectation is that Glencore PLC is "Attempting A Rebound Following A Downward Trend May Consolidate Further Before Continuing Higher." This implies that while there might have been a recent downtrend, the analysis anticipates a recovery. The mention of potential further consolidation suggests a cautious optimism, indicating a possible pause before a more sustained upward movement. In the long term (next 5 to 8 weeks) , the outlook is "Range-Bound In A Weak Regime - Recovery Buy/Long Is Triggered On Strong Bids And Break of Current Range High." This suggests that the price is currently confined within a certain range. However, the strategy outlined indicates a bullish bias, with buy or long positions being considered upon the appearance of strong buying interest or a breakout above the current range's upper limit. Summary: While the 7-day and 14-day trends are currently neutral and range-bound respectively, the analysis across the short, medium, and long term shows a leaning towards potential bullish developments. The short term highlights an attempted bullish reversal, the medium term anticipates a rebound, and the long term suggests a bullish entry point upon specific conditions being met. Therefore, the overall tone is cautiously optimistic with a bullish tilt. Lester Davids Senior Investment Analyst: Unum Capital
